Between the mirror and the white everywhere (not to mention the silver tray) this was a challenging painting.

But, it was painted for two people of whom I am fond!

When a cat owns a home, some areas are of particular importance to him.  Each morning a vigilant patrol is necessary to scope out any intrusion.  Has something been moved, anything new added?  Patrolling is serious cat business- never to be neglected!

This little home was discovered in a rose bush.  Mother bird built the nest in the spring when the bush was sparse.  Sadly, as the bush filled out she was not able to get to her baby through the thorns.  She did not, however, abandon the nest without considerable effort on her part.  Mothers are like that.

The fall colors are brilliant this autumn.  In South Carolina, there is just the hint of crispness to the air.
What does this all mean?  To me it means it is time for pumpkin pie.  I even have a real pumpkin that I will be making into a pie.  Well hopefully, I have never done this before.

Curiosity

Without curiosity where would we be?  Our need to know can lead us into an unplanned adventure or just plain trouble.

I thought it would be fun to turn the long standing adages, "curiosity killed the cat" and "let sleeping dogs lie," upside down.  And it was.

There comes a time in all our lives, when we need our very own hideaway spot.  We should be able to go there to escape the world.  The best hideaway spot is one where no one would think to look for you.  Of course if they do find you, give them the old stink eye.  It works every time!

Cats can tell time.  They are prompt little beings and expect no less from their wait staff. Meals shall appear in a timely fashion and must consist of what was ordered.  None of this substituting 'weight loss management food' for their old standbys like Fancy Feast wet food.   They are in charge of when it is time for a diet, thank you very much!  And for the well being of your psyche, don't even think about bringing home the store brand.  They will walk away in a huff of indignity previously never witnessed.  After all, you should know better than to "cut back" in the CAT area of the budget.

Happy Cat, Happy Home

Hierarchy

6" x 6"
Original Oil Painting
On Museum Quality Panel

SOLD

Establishing hierarchy always seems to be so crucial. However after we are firmly ensconced at the top, we may start to notice that our life has changed; not always for the better.  In order to remain at the top, we realize we must be ever vigilant. Meanwhile, our lesser subjects can take nice long naps!

This adorable little girl managed to get herself lost in Alaska. She left through an open window and was gone for weeks. She has remained rather aloof about her grand adventure.  None the worse for the wear, Beatrice currently resides in Connecticut.

Harold the Heron

6"x6"
Original Oil Painting

SOLD

Harold fishes in a pond near the home of my grandchildren. There is some assuming going on concerning the name they have  bestowed upon the heron.  If Harold is really a male heron deserving of his name, he would bring all the makings for a nest to his mate and she would be responsible for building it.

Mr. and Mrs.

These two are now....

Married!

After much excitement, I am returning to normal life.  (What is that?)  With the goal of catching up, I have been painting away on commissions.

Amongst my commission work, I created this thank you card for the couple.  It is pen and ink with watercolor.

Striped Things

Oil On Panel

6"x10"

This is another treasured little painting hanging in my home. It embodies two enjoyments in my life-furniture and animal rescues.  Animals just know how to put a piece of furniture to its best use. They see furniture differently than we do. Fabric, price, age- none of these characteristics mean a thing.  For them a piece of furniture is either a jumping off place or a source for their unadulterated comfort. And they know the perfect use when they see it. This cat was caught moments before some spring board action!

Experiment.  Initially I hung the smaller piece of art on top; I was surprised to find that it looked much better hanging below.

Two Peas In A Pod

6"x6"

original oil painting

This is another of my favorite paintings.  These two have been partners in crime since the day they met.  The coffee drinker is my mother's first grand daughter and my oldest daughter.  My mother had boundless energy for her grandchildren.  For my daughter, a visit to grandma's house meant an adventure around every corner.
My mother taught me how to be a granny. (It's the simple things that matter.) Today, my mother is adored by her adult grandchildren.

Displaying Art

I like to see small pieces of art in big, fat frames.  This 6"x6" painting frames out to 12"x12."   For display, try an easel!  The advantage to an easel is accessibility to the painting.  This painting sits on a foyer chest.  Occassionally when I walk through the front door, I pick up the painting.  It makes me happy.  Art should always bring joy.

What Do You Think?

9"x 12"
original oil painting

This painting is near and dear to me.  It hangs in my home and I would grab it if ever I fled my house in an emergency!
One of the girls in the painting is my daughter.  She was in college at the time.
We were perusing the High Museum of Art in Atlanta.  I have always appreciated that she is a willing participant for a trip through galleries and museums.

Displaying Art

Hanging art can be a big decision for some.  It does not have to be an ordeal.  Trace the framed piece of art onto newspaper and mark the position of the wire or hook on the newspaper.  Tape the tracing onto the wall wherever you fancy.  Step back and see if you like the spot.  DO NOT HANG YOUR ART TOO HIGH!   It is almost never too low (no matter what the man in your life tells you.)  :)   When you have the perfect spot chosen, affix your hanger to the wall right through the newspaper.  Tear the newspaper away.  Hang the art.  Enjoy

Rockin' Robin

6"x6"
oil on panel
colorful and expressive

SOLD

If you are a robin and you are alive and breathing, it is your lot in life to sing about your day.  We are the lucky recipients of their job.  It isn't always easy to hear their songs through the noise of life, but its such a treat when we do.  Go birds.

It's a great day in South Carolina.

Fitting In With Dolly

5"x 7" oil
on museum quality panel

SOLD

Animals have no problem wrapping themselves around the concept of fitting in.  They love their peeps and their home, no matter.  It is just not a problem, if along the way, life is not a perfect fit.  They simply make do. So what if part of you hangs over the edge.  Relax.  Take a nap.

This is Dolly.  She survived Hurricane Katrina.  She believes she fits in everywhere!

Daisy Mae

5"x7"

SOLD

Commission

Daisy Mae is a senior citizen.  She's sixteen going on seventeen, thank you very much. And she is beautiful...STILL!  My mother will readily admit to being 85 going on 86.  I recently spent the week with her and I noticed all over again just how cute she is.  When it comes to beauty "age dont mean a thing."

Cutest little mom in the world!

Down On the Farm

9"x11"

SOLD

Amongst wedding activities, I have been painting commissions.  This painting will find its home in Indiana.  Nestled in behind soybeans and cornfields, is this happy house. These delightful  white farmhouses are sprinkled all over the hills of southern Indiana.

Wedding Project

These are two of the vases my partner in crime (the bride) and I  "DIYed."  The frosted glass version turned out well.  However, much to our dismay, the mercury glass vase cannot be a vase as it will not hold water.  The mercury glass treatment is done on the inside of the container and when water is introduced the paint flakes off.  Refusing to allow defeat, we found the mercury glass to be even better candle holders than vases.  The candles glow beautifully in them.

BFFs

SOLD

Best friends forever....hmm...actually not.  What you are witnessing here are two girlfriends  experiencing a rare moment of peace.  Daisy is a delightful dog who is just leaving puppyhood.  She pretty much enthusiastically likes everyone.  Thankfully, she suffers rejection well.  Seraphina, on the other hand, suffers fools no where in her life.  She has been quite up to the task of defining the boundaries of her relationship with Daisy.  But sometimes a girl just has to let her guard down and let love in!

I have been very busy with commissions and this painting was just the break I needed.

Mr. Wendall

5"x7"
Oil on Panel

SOLD

Mr. Wendal is a commissioned piece for my daughter's wedding.  The painting is an attendant gift.  Initially I was frustrated with the photo I was given to paint Mr. Wendal.  As the painting progressed I became aware of how wrong I was. The photographer's composition was perfect.  The vertical spokes on the chairs, the light and shadows, and the striped cat added up to a most interesting painting.
Mr. Wendal is quite a guy.  He is another stray that showed up at his family's house.  He was injured and ill in the dead of winter.  Actually, he was a Christmas gift.  Mr. Wendal is a huge cat-must have some Maine Coon in the genetics somewhere.  He is a gentle giant and quite irresistible to all. Once no one seemed to want the pleasure of his company, now everyone he meets puts dibs on him.
If he's ever gone missing, look for him at my house first!

My mother is unabashedly the greatest mom in the world.  She is eighty-five years old.  And like most moms she rarely, if ever, asks for anything.  Until recently when she told me that if I never did another thing for her, she wanted me to paint a Dominicker rooster for her kitchen.  This one's for you, mom.
