Let's play 'Have You Ever'.  Have you ever painted a spotted dog?  YES and what fun, especially this soulful little fellow clutching his very own puppy.  For even more of a hoot, I added all-over squares.

Robert Henri said, "paint the flying spirit of the bird rather than its feathers."

Prior to painting these young ladies, I had met two of them some years ago only for a brief moment; the third not at all. However, by the end of the painting, I  felt as if I knew them.  It was as if I could feel their personalities through my brush.

Speaking of the feathers on a bird, I have discovered that I really enjoy painting fabric patterns.

Don't these two remind you of Grant Wood's couple in his painting with the pitchfork?  (Just please never let either of them gain access to a pitchfork!)

 

Webster's definition of incorrigible is bad beyond correction or reform - which to a "t" describes the behavior of these two misfits.

Meet Hazel and Zeke.  Hazel is a big girl, but Zeke can handle her just fine, thank you very much.  The day Hazel arrived at Zeke's house, his anxiety ridden life became one of unending bad girl fun.

Hazel has been with Zeke for about nine months and she still seems to have an endless supply of naughtiness up her long furry paws...and to think she was brought in to calm Zeke.

I have been painting a lot.  And this little fella wins the 'most fun to paint' award.

He's a little pound kitty.  He was caught feral, neutered and meant for release.  The corner of his ear was cut off to mark him as neutered.  But he was just too friendly to release into the wild.  He was deemed adoptable and lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his forever family.

I met this big guy or gal at the zoo. I have discovered the very best time to visit our zoo is around 9:00 am- right about breakfast time.  I was absolutely mesmerized by the facial expressions displayed by this orangutan.  

 

It's easier to eat your veggies when you have four hands!

This is my favorite kind of donut and I painted it under the tutelage of Julie Ford Oliver.  Can life get any better?  I have been a crazed fan of Julie for a very long time. But  I still remember the first time I saw one of her paintings.  I just stared at it in total fascination thinking,  "how does she do that?" 

I could not wait for her very informative ArtByte about Fracturing to debut. 

 

As fortune would have it, my husband recently began working near Las Cruces, New Mexico.  He will vouch for the first words out of my mouth being, "that's where Julie Ford Oliver lives!"

 

I called Julie about a workshop and she graciously offered me a weekend of her valuable time.  Julie is a delight.  She is exactly as I imagined her to be from reading her blog.  Not only did she teach me plenty, I left Las Cruces as her friend!

Charleston Live Oak

 I met up with this majestic beauty living happily in a Charleston marsh. The name live oak comes from the fact that evergreen oaks remain green and 'live' throughout the winter when oaks are usually dormant.  These grand trees are widespread along the Atlantic coast from southern Virginia to Florida.

 

 

This mess could explain my absence of late.

 

I have been on a mission to paint nearly every room in my house.  I was tired of the 'dated' colors and  I wanted BRIGHTNESS.  I also needed to edit all the art on the walls. 

 

 

 

Who knew the laundry room would be so difficult?  I ended up repainting the entire room after 2 coats.  The color was so wrong that I could not live in the same house with it.  This is the new color (which is not photographing well).   I wanted the color of water on the walls.  The first color went turquoise!   No.  This new color is a very light green blue and we are going to be able to live in this house together. 

 

 

 

 

 

Finally, I mentioned editing the art on the walls.  This is one of my top 5 favorite wall pieces!  It was a gift from a very dear person and I could never part with it.  It hangs in the laundry room and makes me happy to be in there.  (This is quite an accomplishment as I loathe doing laundry.)  It is a simple metal piece with marbles for the cat's eyes.  So clever.

This sweet little beagle was invited inside due to inclement weather.  She found the perfect spot for a little nap.

 

I just love her name, Debbie.  She was a rescue and she came with her name!  Debbie lives happily with her people in Kentucky.

I painted this kitty as a commissioned piece for a little girl in memory of her Akiko.  It really warms my heart when children love animals. 

 

 

 

Well, Beatrice and I have been painting out of the art studio again...more walls and CEILINGS!

 

 

 

 

I am going to put forth some effort to rein in this ceiling painting passion of mine as 'less is always more' in all art forms.  It is not going to be easy; maybe just one more ceiling!

 

I agonized over this color.  After many trips to the paint store resulting in of course a useless extra gallon of paint, I settled on this cool blue and I love it.  I also used satin paint.  I hesitated because I thought satin would show more brush strokes.  Not so.  I actually think it shows less brush strokes than the ceiling I painted with a flat finish.  Since this is a foyer, I wanted the shine from above.

Honestly, I have been painting.  OK, I did take a lot of time off this summer.  I spent time with these two...

 

 

 

 

 

and with my 87 year old mother all the while creating so many wonderful memories. 

 

Back to PBJ, because as it happens peanut butter and jelly sandwiches were a part of my summer, too.  The little girl pictured above loves them.  I am in agreement that the combination is just about perfect.

Little Teeny Tiny is a friend of mine.   She lives with a very good friend.  She just sort of showed up one day.  After a few days spent checking out her chosen people, she brought her family home.  Yes, turns out she was a mother.  Even though she was a sick kitty, she made certain her babies were safe.

I thought this painting needed a little somethin' somethin'.  So, when in doubt add a painting to a painting.  Maybe a seascape?

 

Then, it was time for the husband opinion.  He's been highly trained as my critic.  He knows how to stay out of trouble when offering a critique (most of the time).  Which may be why he gets this stricken look on his face when I force him to "weigh in" on a painting.  He sent me into a tailspin when he said, "what is the cat sitting on?" (He was supposed to be commenting on the seascape addition!)

So, I did more work on the sofa cushion to clear up "what's the cat sitting on."
